Planning a multi-country coach tour in the Schengen area

Three classic routes

These combinations keep each driving day short enough for sightseeing on the way:

• Paris – Brussels – Amsterdam: about 3 hours 50 minutes to Brussels, then about 2 hours 40 minutes to Amsterdam.
• Munich – Salzburg – Vienna – Prague: short legs of 2 to 4 hours, with Hallstatt or Český Krumlov as a stop on the way.
• Milan – Zurich – Geneva – Chamonix: Alpine scenery, about 3 hours 20 minutes from Milan to Zurich and 1 hour 10 minutes from Geneva to Chamonix.

One coach for the whole tour, or local coaches?

A coach that stays with the group carries the luggage between cities and keeps the same driver. The price includes the driver's accommodation and the empty return at the end.

For tours that fly between countries, separate local coaches in each city are usually cheaper. The estimate for each route shows both one-way and multi-day prices.

What changes at each border

Road tolls, vignettes and city coach fees change from country to country: Austria, Switzerland, Czechia and Slovakia use vignettes or distance tolls, and many historic centres charge coaches to enter. These are added to the estimate for each country.

Travellers still need valid passports or ID cards: police may carry out spot checks near borders even without routine controls.

Getting the plan right
